Harborside Health Center endorses active participation in the political and social promotion of the medical cannabis movement. To participate in our patient activist program, check in at reception and you will be directed to the Patient Activist Resource Center (PARC). You will find all the necessary resources to fill out online forms, write letters, or make phone calls pertinent to the movement. To encourage participation, we will give you a free gift every week that you volunteer an hour to work on activism in our facilities.
"Fight crime, not cannabis!" This is the cry of the Save Harborside campaign. On July 10, 2012, federal agents taped a notice of property forfeiture to the doors of Harborside Health Center. If successful, this action would shut down Harborside, forcing thousands of patients back into the underground, illegal market. Nearly one thousand gathered in downtown Oakland, CA for the rally to save Harborside. See photos from the Rally The closure of Harborside would have an especially destructive effect on California's most medically challenged patients, who are less able to negotiate the dangers of the illegal marketplace and who cannot risk using untested cannabis from unregulated sources. Legitimate medical cannabis businesses want and expect to pay their fair share of taxes. In addition to federal taxes, dispensaries also pay state and/or local taxes. However, the IRS is now using 280E to stop medical cannabis businesses from making standard business deductions, which leaves them with a crushing tax bill they cannot afford. In a growing number of audits, the IRS is leaving dispensaries no recourse but to shut down – or move to the underground economy. This punitive and outdated tax policy cannot stand. That's why the 280E National Reform Team seeks volunteers to help educate people about the IRS campaign against medical cannabis providers. To develop a winning court strategy, we're also asking supporters to contribute to the 280E legal defense fund. Learn more at 280Ereform.org.
